News & Upcoming Events

  • We would like to invite you to a meeting/presentation regarding our trip to Holland in 2010 on 23rd October 2009 at 9 pm. Due to a current lack of facilities, Ajax Sea scouts have lent their head quarters, which enables us to use a warm sophisticated environment for the meeting. Ajax is based at 19 a Ditton Reach, Thames Ditton, KT7 0XB.
We are meeting normal time at Ravens Ait and will walk at 8.30ish pm with all scouts to Ajax Head quarters. So you do not need to collect your child from Ravens Ait, instead we like you to take your child home after the meeting.
  • 8th November 2009, Remembrance Sunday. We meet at the car park on Holy Field Road, next to the British Legion at 10 am. Please ensure that your child wears uniform (warm clothing underneath the uniform), as we will parade to the war memorial and back to the British Legion.

  • 15th November 2009, a special thanksgiving services in honour of our centenary celebration, for all members, parents and supporters of 1st Surbiton Sealion Sea Scouts. St Marks Church, St Marks Hill, Surbiton at 2 pm.
  • Important; can every Scout that received a cap at St Georges Parade ensure that they bring them back this coming Friday. We still have not received all caps back and need them for the remembrance parade and the service at St Marks Church the week after.

  • Last but not least, please if you haven't already register yourself on this website using the link on the right so that we can start sending emails.

Raven's Ait

As many of you may have heard, the company leasing Raven's Ait, where the Troop meet in the summer for boating, went out of business at the end of last year. Since then squatters have taken up residence of the island, an act which made the BBC local news, and have mistreated some of our equipment that was stored there. On Thursday 19th March the squatters were evicted by the council leaving the island free in the meantime for the scouts' use on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. So smiles all round for now!

Mailing List

From February 2009 the Troop hopes to use this website and email as the main form of communication. Hopefully parents will no longer need to find out about activities and events by finding soggy letters that have just been through a nice spin cycle!

If you are the parent/guardian of a scout in the Troop, please Register to join the Mailing List.

Skills in Scouts
You learn how to row in the Sea Scouts on the river and how to control and take care of boats and keep them in good condition. In the summer you learn to kayak. When the Winter months begin we do more badgework in scout meetings. By earning badges we produce more skills, that most of would not know we were good at. All together there are seventy activity badges in total. There are also eight challenge badges. As scouts we also do alot of community work for Surbiton. We also somehow learn how to march as a scout group in the annual Surbiton Festival.

All about scouts
The reason I came to scouts, was that I was to old for cubs and I thought the idea of rowing on the River Thames was GREAT!

On Ravens Ait
We are on Raven Ait from July - September, we row in many different types of boats. They include, gigs, dinghys, canoes, and kayaks. The leaders and some explorers go on the motor boats. We have to wear a bouyancy aid incase we fall in, also the oars are massive.

In the hut
When we aren't on the river we play games and do different activities in the scout hut. Sometimes we practice knots, play lighthouseand other varied games.

Have you got anything to do on a Friday?
If not scouts is a fun entertaining thing to do on Friday. We do boating for the summer and games in the winter. In the summer you go to canoe club which is free one hour kayaking lessons compared to £12.99 at other places. It is really fun at scouts and at the canoe club. Now and again we do whitewatering.

My time at scout camp
We went to camp in a place called Lake District and it had a lot of lovely views. My favourite thing was air rifle shooting and rock climbing . Also football. My least favourite thing was rock climbing because I am afraid of heights.

Freddie

When I went to Scout camp I was in Andrew's tent with Keiran, Tom, David, Sam and me. The camp was the Lake District and the journey was really long and boring. Luckily I played a couple of games on the way. Near the end of the trip we stopped to get a burger king. It took six hours but we still got there. My favourite thing at camp was going and having fun all the time. My least favourite thing was slidding downa twenty-five foot hill. Even though i fell I enjoyed camp a lot it was the best thing ever in the world.

Troop Holidays

Note that the Troop does not break for Half Term holidays and only takes short holidays at Christmas, Easter and after Summer Camp.  We do not only meet during School Terms.  Look at the Programme for precise dates.

Scout Promise, Law and Motto

 The Scout Promise

The Scout Promise is:

On My Honour, I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to God and to the Queen,
To help other people
And to keep the Scout Law

 The Scout Law

The Scout Law is:

  1. A Scout is to be trusted.
  2. A Scout is loyal.
  3. A Scout is friendly and considerate.
  4. A Scout belongs to the worldwide family of Scouts.
  5. A Scout has courage in all difficulties.
  6. A Scout makes good use of time and is careful of possessions and property.
  7. A Scout has self-respect and respect for others.

 The Scout Motto

The Scout Motto is:

Be Prepared

 The Scout Handshake

All over the world, when a Scout meets a fellow Scout, they shake hands with the left hand.

This is a sign of trust and to show their membership of the Scout Movement.

In Africa, warriors used spears and shields in tribal wars.  To offer your left to another warrior meant having to put down your shield, leaving you unprotected. It became a sign of great trust to shake left-handed for this reason.

B-P noticed this custom when he was in Africa with the Army and later decided to make it the Scout's handshake to show our trust in one another.
